Quality portfolio presentation
Why do we need a quality portfolio
Objectives of the Quality Portfolio
The EP3 QCO provides the quality portfolio to identify the quality objectives, to describe all activities and responsibilities related to the achievement of these objectives and implement them by means such as quality planning, quality assurance, quality control, and quality improvement, within the Episode 3 quality system.
The quality portfolio applies to any project deliverables and processes that could/will pass from a work package to another and especially from the Episode 3 project to the European Commission.
The main purpose is to answer the following questions:
-
What is the quality policy? This expresses the intended direction of the Episode 3 project with regard to quality.
-
Who is in charge? This expresses the quality infrastructure, Episode 3 actors, reporting chains, and responsibilities.
-
Where are we going? This expresses what the project is expected to achieve.
-
How are we going? This expresses the processes, the operational definitions, resources, and standards available to achieve the quality objectives.
Objectives of the Episode 3 project
Our quality objectives are closely linked to the SESAR quality objectives. As the SESAR definition phase, the EPISODE3 project’s specificities are that, on the one hand, it is a typical feasibility study; on the other hand it requires the participation of a large number of stakeholders and the acceptance of the conclusions of the feasibility study by even more stakeholders. Therefore, apart from the generic objectives applicable to any project (such as reaching the objectives within the time and budget constraints), the main quality objectives of EPISODE3 are:
| Ref. | Title |
Description |
|---|---|---|
| QM1 | Quality of the deliverables | To provide deliverables which meet the expectations of all participants, being in itself the condition for acceptance by the European Commission. This implies firstly an active and collaborative way of working together by all consortium members, and secondly the formal approval of deliverables |
| QM2 | Quality of the buy-in process | To ensure that all stakeholders, not necessarily participating in the projects, support the content of the deliverables. This acceptance will be reflected in the feedback received from all stakeholders. |
| QM3 | Quality of the processes | To ensure that all necessary processes have been set up and formulated in a way to ensure an efficient execution of the projects that takes full account of its specificities, with all necessary management plans being built "with quality in mind". |
The figure below shows how quality activities described in the present document contribute to the achievement of the Episode3 quality objectives.

Quality control
The focus of quality control is on the deliverables of the project – i.e. EC deliverables and project deliverables. Quality control monitors deliverables to verify that they are of acceptable quality, and are complete and correct.
The Quality portfolio and the Library allow the EP3 project team member to identify
-
The major deliverables of the project that will be controlled.
-
The quality standards and the correctness and completeness criteria established for these deliverables.
- The quality control activities that will be executed to monitor the quality of the deliverables. How often or when the quality control will be performed.
Quality assurance
The focus of quality assurance is on the processes used in the project. Quality assurance ensures that project processes are used effectively to produce quality project deliverables.
The Quality portfolio and the Library allow the EP3 project team member to identify
- The project processes subject to quality assurance.
- The quality standards and stakeholder expectations for that process.
- The quality assurance activity – such as a quality audit or reviews - that will be executed to monitor that project processes are properly followed.
- How often or when the quality assurance activity will be performed.
