Episode 3/CAATS II joint dissemination event - 13th & 14th October 2009 (Brussel) |
The Episode 3 and CAATS II projects, in cooperation with the European Commission(1) and with the SESAR JU, are happy to announce the workshop “ ATM concept validation: the challenge of Single Sky and next generation ATM ” to be held in Brussels(2) on the 13th and 14th of October 2009.
Episode 3 and CAATS II are the two key EC projects which pave the way towards the validation of the target concept for the future air traffic management system of Europe, the core objective of SESAR and Single Sky policy.
Episode 3 deals with the complexity of the SESAR target concept, the break-down of a high level concept into scenarios for validation and new and pragmatic validation techniques to use to validate concepts at an early stage of development, such as gaming or expert groups. SESAR projects will use this gained experience in validation of ATM concepts. CAATS II provides material and guidance how to validate operational concepts at different stages of research and development, considering particular objectives and constraints related to the safety, human factors, environment and business cases (the "case based approach" for validation). SESAR projects will have to develop cases in these areas as the development of concepts progress towards validation. The results of both projects provide meaningful input to refine the European Operational Concept Validation Methodology (E-OCVM) adopted by the SESAR work programme and support the SESAR Joint Undertaking and its participants at both the conceptual level as well as in their practical work to validate ATM concepts in a coherent European approach. This workshop provides the opportunity to see the results of the two EC projects, to discuss their importance for the work in SESAR and to collect the relevant information for further in-depth studies.
For logistical reasons, advance registration is necessary. Please confirm your participation before 15/09/2009 by registering on line through this website (http://www.e3c2workshop.isdefe.es/rform.html),

Dynamic DCB gaming (WP3.3.2 ) - From 27th to 29th May 2009 (Bretigny) |
The WP3.3.2 - dynamic DCB and Business Trajectory Management - gaming exercise took place on the 27th-29th of May ay Bretigny. Organised as dynamic and interactive demonstration sessions, those simulations allowed partcipants to examine on concrete cases how congested situations could be managed in SESAR IP2 by planning actors - network managers, APOC and AOCs in the the short-term planning and execution phases. Partcipants were from AENA, IBERIA, DSNA, LNVL, INECO and Air France. The feedback was very positive on this approach and many suggestions for improvements and future activities were collected. Many thanks to all partners for their very contructive and pro-active participation. |

Lessons Learnt Workshop / 10th to 12th March 2009 (Madrid) |
Episode 3 has had many challenges to face, not least the difficult process of trying to start validation of a large and complex concept like that described in the SESAR Concept of Operations. The European Operational Concept Validation Methodology (E-OCVM) was mandated as the basic reference for this work and in March (10-12 in Madrid) we will hold a Lessons Learnt Workshop involving almost 30 project staff from across the different work packages, exercises and partner organisations. The objective will be to ensure that our hard won experience can be brought together and documented so that it benefits those who will have to continue meeting the same challenges in SESAR. It will also feed back into other European Framework Projects such as CAATS II and the E-OCVM Forum to help refine the E-OCVM itself. We are expecting the visit of representatives from the European Commission and the SESAR JU. |

EXCOM#4 / 4th March 2009 (Brussel) |
The 4th of March in Brussels EUROCONTROL HQ, an Executive Committee is organised. On this first EXCOM meeting since the project restart, we will present a financial situation of the project, provide first results of our validation exercises, and discuss the schedule ahead of us. We are expecting the presence of the European Commission and a representative from the SESAR JU. WP leaders will also present their analysis of the inputs of Episode 3 to the SESAR work programme based on the latest SESAR Description of Work. |

EP3 TMA Prototyping Session 4 / 23th to 27th February 2009 (Naples) |
The fourth and final Episode 3 TMA prototyping session (WP5.3.6) was successfully conducted at the SICTA premises in Naples from Feb 23rd to Feb 27th 2009. Seven controller's from three EP3 ANSP partners (ENAV, LFV and NATS) participated to the experiment. LFV and NATS importantly ensured that their participating controllers were picked from those who had previously gained experience of the concept and procedures through their previous involvement in the EEC prototyping sessions. This 4th prototyping session complemented in a different high density TMA environment (Rome TMA) the three prototyping sessions already conducted at the EEC based on Dublin TMA.The main focus of the fourth prototyping session was the assessment of operability (usability, suitability) and the perceived benefits and limitations of A-CDA, a 2D P-RNAV route structure (Point Merge System –PMS) and ASPA S&M Spacing. Other low level objectives included the assessment of:

EP3 Final Prototyping Session 2nd to 6th 2009 (Bretigny) |
Episode 3 (the project behind the recent prototyping sessions) was set up to validate the SESAR concept. The final prototyping session of three sessions took place at the EEC between the 2nd and the 6th of February 2009. Controllers from MUAC, AENA, DFS and NATS participated to the simulation. Session 3 concentrated on 4D trajectory management, aircraft flying to their Reference Business Trajectory (RBT) and complying to a Controlled Time of Arrival (CTA) when in the horizon of an arrival manager. The main focus was on how en-route ATCos could facilitate and manage traffic flying to an RBT and how they could deliver traffic, flying to CTAs, to the TMA in a more manageable way. The report on all three sessions will be published in April 2009. Frank Dowling |

EP3 TMA Prototyping Session 3 / 21th to 23rd January 2009 (Bretigny) |
The third and final EEC based Episode 3 TMA prototyping session (WP5.3.6) was successfully conducted at the EEC from Jan 19th to Jan 23rd 2009. Eight controller's from all EP3 ANSP partners (DFS, ENAV, LFV, LVNL and NATS) participated to the experiment. There were 4 controller changes from the previous session, meaning that new arrivals, once again, had to get up to speed on the concept and ATC procedures in a very short time frame. The main objective of the third prototyping session was to assess from the controllers’ perspective the acceptability and operational feasibility of A-CDA from TOD to FAF in a P-RNAV environment, with a scripted traffic reflecting the level of metering that could be achieved to the IAF through an arrival manager (AMAN) and the respect of controlled time of arrival (CTA) using a simulated FMS-4D RTA functionality in upstream sectors (Feed and Arrival). This session continued from PS2 with focus on the refinement of controllers working methods (procedures, tasks, roles) and an assessment of operability (usability, suitability) and perceived benefits and limitations of A-CDA and P-RNAV. The impact of arrival aircraft flying a CTA on the feasibility of A-CDA and P-RNAV was also investigated. In addition, the impact of full and mixed RTA equipage conditions on feasibility and controllers’ acceptance of the proposed working method was assessed. Finally, the compatibility with departures (scripted continuous climb departure) was examined. The fourth and final Episode 3 TMA prototyping session (WP5.3.6), hosted and managed by ENAV, is scheduled to take place in Naples between the 23rd and 27th February 2009. |

EP3 TMA Prototyping Session 2 / 8th to 12th December 2008 (Bretigny) |
The second Episode 3 TMA prototyping session (WP5.3.6) was successfully conducted at the EEC between Dec 8th and 12th 2008. Once again, 8 controller's from all EP3 ANSP partners (DFS, ENAV, LFV, LVNL and NATS) participated to the experiment. As there were 4 controller changes from the previous session, the new arrivals had to get up to speed on the concept and ATC procedures in a very short time frame. Two IAA controllers were, once again, on hand for advice, observation and support. The next session is scheduled to take place at the EEC early in 2009 (19th - 23rd January 2009). This third session will assess the link with 4D (time constraints i.e. CTA/RTA). |

EP3 TMA Prototyping Session 1 / 10th to 14th November 2008 (Bretigny) |
The first Episode 3 TMA prototyping session (WP5.3.6) was successfully carried out at the EEC between Nov 10th and 14th, 2008. Eight TMA controllers participated from five EP3 ANSP partners (DFS, ENAV, LFV, LVNL and NATS). Three IAA controllers provided external support related to airspace advise, training and observation. |
